Play-by-post vs Discord roleplay, tabletop and AI chat
Simming sits between a writing group and a tabletop game. Here is how it compares with the alternatives.
Each kind of roleplay suits a different person. The table below compares them on the things that usually decide it.
| Play-by-post | Discord roleplay | Tabletop | AI chat | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pace | Days between posts | Minutes, often live | One session at a time | Instant |
| Schedule | Write when you can | Best when others are online | Set session times | Any time |
| Writing | Full scenes | Short messages | Mostly spoken | Short messages |
| Who you write with | A steady crew | Whoever is in the channel | A small table | A program |
| Record | A full archive | Chat history | Notes, if kept | Your chat log |
Discord roleplay and simming
Many Discord roleplay servers are busy and quick: you can drop into a channel and be writing within minutes, with whoever is online. Others run slower campaigns where people post when they can, much like a sim. Many sims use a Discord server too, often for planning and talk, while the story itself goes out as longer posts by email or on a forum.
Literate roleplay
"Literate roleplay" is a term from forum and chat roleplay. It means posts written in full sentences and paragraphs, with attention to spelling and style. By that measure, almost all simming is literate roleplay. The difference is the crew: in a sim you write with the same people for months, inside one shared setting.
AI chat and writing with people
AI chat roleplay answers instantly and never gets tired. A sim is slower and asks more of you. In return, the other characters are written by people who remember last month's scene and have their own plans for the story. Some groups ask that every post be written by the writer rather than generated, so check a group's rules if that matters to you.
Who simming suits
People who like to write, who want a steady habit rather than a live session, and who enjoy building a story with the same people over months or years.
